RECORDING BLOG #005

August 27th, 2009

singing-techniquesToday I spent about 8 hours belting out songs. I have never sung so loud and so high…ever. I felt like I was chanelling both Prince and We’re Marching On. Seriously. But James knew how to get what he wanted out of my voice and so he did. I am excited to hear the mix! This means we’ve officially finished recording our single and it will be available soon. This one’s a bouncy one.  On fyyyyah.

No photos today but we took some video… I can’t find firewire so it will have to wait to be posted. Let me tell you though, Jamie captures gold when he picks up the video camera and he definitely caught me singing the wrong words to my own song.

In other news, the Friends in Bellwoods II cd came out a couple days ago, so I hope you all bought it. There have been some good articles about the project lately, google it to read lots. SEE YOU ON FRIDAY! TORONTO. LEE’S PALACE. 9PM BE THERE. Also our good friends have some free downloads on their website, and they are of the hip hop variety. Yum.

RECORDING BLOG #004

August 20th, 2009

The strings are done for the 7″! Woo! Vocals are wrapping up this week. We’re psyched on it. There will be pre-order information very soon. Tonight we  worked on a brand new song. It was reaaaallllly fun and foot tappin’.  Stomping, even. It may very well be the most rocking FCL song in existence. Proof is below.

That’s right, Kyle broke a bass string. WHOA!

Hope y’all are coming to the Friends in Bellwoods release next week! Should be fuuuuuuun.

LISTEN EDITH, I KNOW YOU'RE SINGING, I KNOW YOU'RE SINGIN, BUT THE NEIGHBOURS MAY THINK I'M TORTURING YOU.

August 17th, 2009

Oh…All in the Family.

Here in Forest City Lovers, we’re happy to be part of a great family. The OOTS family. And to celebrate such, we created a fun mash up with our best band friends for the latest Toronto show. It also happened to be the birthday of our label guru Stuart Duncan. We tossed aside the idea of singing Happy Birthday and rocked out instead. Our friends at Morning Noon Night captured a few songs in HD and you can take a look at “Orphans” from our Haunting Moon Sinking record, and “Belladonna” from the D’Urbervilles We are The Hunters record,  below!

Chromewaves.net also reviewed the show and has some pretty amazing photos up. Thanks to all our friends (new and old) for coming to the show and making it so disgustingly sweaty. It’s a night we won’t forget any time soon… unless I figure out a way to wash out the sweat from my dress.

Also a little reminder that the Friends in Bellwoods compilation is going to be released on Tuesday, August 25 (along with other great albums that day, such as The Wooden Sky) and you should all go buy a copy. We’ll be streaming out track on our MySpace soon, but not quite yet. Have to keep some mystery…  The big release shows start this week and you can read all about it on our MySpace, we list all the venues. We will be performing at Lee’s Palace with our other best band friends Ohbijou and Evening Hymns  and all the proceeds go to the Daily Bread Food Bank, so you may as well go buy tickets now.

THE MERRY-TIMES

August 4th, 2009

It’s raining again in Toronto. They’re calling for severe thunderstorms today and tomorrow. This seems to be the story of the summer of 2009! I don’t mind but I think the squirrels are getting tired of being soaking wet. Late last night we crept among the last of the rotting garbage and returned to our houses. We had been in Sackville, New Brunswick (my favourite town in Canada) for the last five days, where we hung out and enjoyed the Sappyfest music festival. If you’re not familiar it’s a lovely festival that is curated by some really great people (Julie Doiron, Struts Gallery, Paul Henderson and Shotgun Jimmie amongst the amazingness).  Although we were all there for the weekend, we didn’t play this year BUT Kyle rocked the bass in the D’Urbervilles and Mika played some lovely strings for Timber Timbre. It’s all about supporting the family, y’know?

In between swimming in the ocean and eating treats at the Bridge St. Cafe we took in some great music including  wicked sets  by our dear friends Ohbijou, the Magic and Snowblink, as well as seeing some amazing bands kill it such as Ladyhawk and Wintersleep. Pretty much every show rocked. We hope to be there next year!

Our affair with the maritimes was brief this time, but we hope to be back soon to play some shows in the not so distant future. We need to write this record first. I assure you, the wait will be worth it. These rainy days can only be productive.

On our way home we found this amazing sign, which illustrated that there is nothing that New Brunswick can’t do:

p.s. right now the garbage trucks are on our street and it smells like barf and rotting hamburgers is invading our whole house :(
